My favorite movie is Maleficent. The reason it is my
favorite is because it is based on my childhood favorite princess, Aurora; The
Sleeping Beauty. Hearing about the movie, I believed it would be specifically
about the sleeping princess, but as I watched the amazing film in the theaters
the day of the midnight showing, I realized the main character was not Aurora,
instead, the witch who had casted the spell on her. However, throughout the
film, it became clear that the witch is NOT a witch, but a fairy whom had her
wings cut and was left to die alone in her bitterness. The plot of the story
changed in a whole dramatic way that made me adore the ‘witch’, whose name was
Maleficent. It was a tragic story about a heartbreak and revenge. In the end of
the movie, the theme clearly is that true love does not only have to be from a
prince or a man. Maleficent led me to acknowledging the changing perspectives
Disney is trying to send to children, and how it connects with our current
events in American society. Maleficent also sends out the message that revenge
is never beneficiary, unless you are indeed a ‘witch’, or only acquire coldness
in your heart. Maleficent, like
Disney’s recent movie Frozen, demonstrated the story behind the villain in the
movie. In conclusion, the film was filled with amazing plot twists, that made this version of the
princess’s story, a better watch.
